The 5th Sino-Japan International Design Workshop was successfully held in Dalian University of Technology

With the strong support of the International Office ofDalian Universityof Technology and the School of Architecture andFine Art, the inaugural phase of the 5th Sino-Japan International Design Workshop was successfully conducted atDLUT from October 06 to 15, 2023.

The Sino-Japan International Design Workshop has been held annually since 2016 and is jointly organized by Dalian University of Technology's School of Architecture and Art, Dalian Minzu University's School of Design, and Hiroshima University's Graduate School of Advanced Science and Technology Department for Science and Research in Japan. The Sino-Japan International Design Workshop comprises three stages: proposal, development plan, and final outcomes. The workshop held in Dalian serves as the proposal stage where six design groups were formed with a mix of eighteen graduate and undergraduate students specializing in planning and architecture from our university, six graduate and undergraduate students specializing in visual communication from Dalian Minzu University, along with twelve graduate students specializing in construction engineering from Hiroshima University. Additionally, nine Chinese and Japanese teachers provided comprehensive guidance throughout the entire design process

On October 6, a delegation of teachers and students from Hiroshima University arrived in Dalian. Professor Ma Hui, Vice Dean for International Cooperation and Exchange, hosted the teachers from Hiroshima University and Dalian Minzu University on behalf of the School of Architecture and Art. On the morning of October 7, the workshop commenced. Professor Lu Wei provided an explanation of the workshop topics and requirements, while Professor Hu Wenhui introduced the historical districts of Dalian. In the afternoon of the same day, all teachers and students conducted a field survey around Dalian Railway Station. An evening welcome party was held on October 9 at Zaishuiyifang Western Restaurant to celebrate their arrival with attendance from 48 Chinese and Japanese teachers and students.

From October 8 to 12, each group carried out design assignments through exchange and communication. The intermediate stage results were published on October 9 with comments provided by both Chinese and Japanese professors onsite. The final results for the opening phase in Dalian were announced on October 12. On October 13-14, Hiroshima University's teachers and students visited Dalian downtown area, Lushunkou district, and Kaifaqu district. They visited Dalian Urban Planning Exhibition Center and Dalian Minzu University.

The teachers and students of Hiroshima University successfully completed the Dalian phase of the workshop on October 15 and returned home. From October 16 to November 16, the workshop will proceed with its deepening program. Students in each group will continue to engage in online communication and collaboration while receiving guidance from Chinese and Japanese instructors to refine and deepen their design programs. Between November 18 and 30, Chinese teachers and students will visit Hiroshima University to finalize the outcomes of this workshop, conducting comprehensive research between Hiroshima and Osaka.

Through the Sino-Japanese International Design Workshop activities, our students will expand their horizons, enhance interdisciplinary communication skills across different majors and grades, as well as gain valuable experience in international cooperation. Additionally, during the workshop, collaborative research projects involving VR experiments were conducted with the participation of over 20 students from our college.
